St Bede's Rag Week

Rory Evans writes: 'My Dad had prostate cancer five years ago at the age of 46. Luckily for him he had, by chance, read an article in the paper which prompted him to go for a blood test, which led to an early diagnosis of the disease. Following radical surgery, he continues to remain healthy'.

'Not so lucky was my uncle who was diagnosed at the age of 45 in the same year as my dad. Due to lack of awareness and no screening his late diagnosis had enabled the disease to spread. He has had to have continual treatment and still, four and a half years later, is not free of the disease'.

'With this in mind, I was determined to raise awareness and funding for your charity. I made a speech to fellow sixth formers about prostate cancer and the lack of funding that it receives and managed to secure their votes so that one sixth of the money raised at our Rag Week would go towards your charity'.

'The Rag Week itself is a group effort by the whole of the sixth form, involving the rest of the school. It includes a diverse range of activities. Lunch time events, an evening Rag show and an auction of promises all raised loads of money as did wearing fancy dress and a sponsored walk to school in pyjamas. Another event was a balloon release, with the furthest balloon travelling approximately 143 miles to Norwich'.

'These activities allowed us to raise £4750 for you. I have great pleasure in donating this to such a worthy cause on behalf of all students and staff at St Bede's School, Redhill'.
