June 2008, Round the Island Race
Once again, Prostate UK was chosen as one of JP Morgan Asset Management’s
preferred charities along with Breast Cancer Care, the Ellen MacArthur
Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support for the 2008 Round the Island Race.
This year 1875 boats took part one of which, ICAP Leopard the 100 foot
super maxi yacht owned and skippered my Mike Slade, raced in our name
as part of the newly established Charity Squad. Mike was supporting
us in recognition of Kit and Susie Hobday’s Ignorance Isn’t Bliss campaign.
As if that wasn’t enough Leopard also broke the record for the fastest
monohull to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight by completing the course
in under four hours! View

June 2008, Isle of Wight Coastal Challenge
In June walkers undertook the ninth Annual Challenge for Prostate UK.
Walking 69 miles in three days was no small feat; it is usually recommended
that one takes 5 days to complete the circuit of the coastal path
successfully. The walk encompassed the outstanding scenery across
the Downs, the famous Needles, and seriously eroded, but wonderfully
scenic, South Coast. Spirits were high as walkers celebrated completion
of the mission with a glass of champagne back in Shanklin. So far,
thanks to your amazing generosity, we have raised over £80,000 to
fulfil our mission to stop prostate diseases ruining lives. View

June 2008, Pants in the Park
Pants in the Park 2008 saw our annual fun run, in partnership with Simplyhealth,
go nationwide and take place in Andover, Bristol, London, Leeds and
Manchester. Over 700 runners, ranging from 3 to 87 years old took
part in the five fun runs, all wearing their pants superman style
as they ran, jogged or walked one of the 5km courses supporting our
cause. We have already raised over £30,000 and sponsorship is still
flooding in; but even more importantly we have raised awareness of
prostate diseases in all these regions.
Local newspapers and radio covered each event and Pants in the Park even made it to Asia as the London run was covered not only by a Japanese newspaper but by Korean TV as well! Celebrities were on hand to help motivate our runners; Sir Jimmy Savile was in Roundhay Park and Bristol rugby stars Luke Arscott and David Blaney inspired a few sprint finishes as they handed out the medals at Ashton Court.
As you can see from the pictures, the standard of Pants was fabulous with each location having more than enough worthy winners. View pictures.
June 2008, Ambassadors' Dinner
This year the annual dinner hosted by our trusty Ambassadors took place
on 11 June at Goldsmiths’ Hall. This magnificent Livery Hall, which
opened in 1835, is one of London's hidden treasures. Ambassador Scott
Cormack once again hosted the evening and a staggering £140,000 was
raised. Guests were treated to a champagne reception, 3 course meal
and auction packed with money can’t buy items. One such item included
a ride of a lifetime with Sir Stirling Moss OBE in a Ferrari 250
GTO around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit. Not only did this
result in additional funds raised for Prostate UK but also secured
us coverage in national newspapers!
The event was a huge success but couldn’t have happened without the support of several companies who donated their time and services for free and for which we are extremely grateful. View pictures.
February 14th 2008, Alternative Valentines Dinner
This evening of special entertainment took place at Lord's Cricket Ground
and over 150 people attended our fundraising dinner in aid of Prostate
UK and Wellbeing of Women. During the champagne reception guests
were invited to learn the art of sabrage. This was followed by an
evening hosted by Henry Kelly and we were delighted that we were
treated to after dinner comedy by Jo Brand.
The auction and fundraising game were a huge success and the event raised over £6,500 for each charity. We would like to thank everyone who attended, all those people who donated the superb auction items and those who so generously bid for them. Our thanks also to Henry Kelly and Jo Brand for their support of the event. View pictures.
November 2007, Hike for Hope, Kenya
Congratulations to all 93 sponsored hikers who recently set off to trek
the Rift Valley in Kenya, raising funds for Prostate UK and Wellbeing
of Women in our second Hike for Hope. Our Chairman, Professor Roger
Kirby was amongst those hiking through the rugged terrain. He was
joined by patients, doctors and nurses, and others that had been
affected by prostate and gynaecological diseases. Participants were
hiking at altitudes of 2700 metres for 25 km a day over the Rift
Valley's extinct volcanoes. The toughest challenge of the trek involved
a steep climb to the top of an extinct volcano, Mount Longonot.
Thank you to everyone who took part in this extremely challenging and inspirational adventure. Over £280,000 has been raised so far and plans for the third Hike for Hope are already underway…View pictures.
October 2007, Annual Luncheon
The very special eleventh Annual Luncheon at The Dorchester on Friday
12 October was held in the presence of our Patron Her Royal Highness
The Duchess of Gloucester. It was a magnificent event with well over
300 supporters attending and raised a total of over £37,000.
We were entertained by our guest speaker, the renowned actor Sir
Tom Courtenay, star of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
who regaled those present with his own experience of being a patient.
Thank you to all of our supporters who joined us and also to everyone who donated the superb auction items. We are also extremely grateful to those people who so generously bid and to our auctioneer Nick Bonham. View pictures.
June 2007, Lyke Wake Walk, Yorkshire
Over thirty people (in three separate teams) have completed the formidable
Lyke Wake Walk, 42 miles in one day over the North Yorkshire Moors,
in aid of Prostate UK. They have so far raised over £140,000
in sponsorship.
We are grateful to everyone who took part in the walk and to everyone
who so generously sponsored them.

June 2007, Pants in the Park, Battersea
The third annual Pants in the Park on Father's Day was a huge success
with almost 200 people running or walking 5km around Battersea Park
in aid of Prostate UK.
Thank you to everyone who took part, it was wonderful to see so many
people of all ages, with so much energy and enthusiasm, helping to raise
awareness of prostate diseases. All participants joined in the spirit
of the day and wore their fancy dress pants on the outside of their
running clothes, and there were some great outfits to be seen.
