The prostate cancer practice at The Christie Hospital is the largest in the UK. The population has a high proportion of socially deprived men and Manchester’s cancer outcomes are the worst in the UK.

The Christie and Manchester University have one of the best cancer research laboratories in the UK but there is no Academic input to urological cancers such as prostate cancer.

The aim of this initiative is to develop a major focus for prostate cancer research which would ally the cancer research ability and intellect with Christie clinical practice. This would potentially draw highly talented scientists, cancer specialists and additional funding in to the field of prostate cancer research. It would also facilitate the training of young scientists and junior urological surgeons so that they will potentially contribute to future prostate cancer scientific research and clinical trials. The overall effect would be a boost for the standards of prostate cancer care in the NW of England and potentially for the whole of the UK.
