SLOW CYCLE BIKE
RACE
Get in the slow lane and join the race
for last place.
On Sunday 26 September, Prostate UK, is teaming with
Hackney Borough Council, to hold the first Slow Cycle charity race in London
Fields. Join in with the slowest, most chilled-out bike race of the year!
What
is the Slow Cycle bike race?
The principle of the
Slow Cycle is simple: he who loses, wins. The winner is the person
who crosses the finish line last, proving definitively that slow
and steady really does win the race. Each participant can try as
many times as they like to travel as slowly as possible along a 10
metre course without putting their foot down, leaving their lane
or stopping completely. Each run will be timed and the rider with
the slowest recorded time of the day will win £100 of cycling vouchers. |
When
is it?
The Slow Cycle race
kicks off at 12 noon on Sunday 26 September. There will be free bike
health checks throughout the day, plus food and drink stalls. At
11am there will be a free kids’ race in which children under 12 can
show the adults how it»s done.
How
do I enter?
Registration for the
Slow Cycle is £10, with all proceeds going to Prostate UK and the
fight against prostate disease. To mark this inaugural event, each
participant will receive a limited edition Slow Cycle T-Shirt. Bring
your own bike along to compete or use one provided. Registration here on-line or register on the day.
How
do I get there?
Here is a map. If
you don»t fancy cycling to the event, London Fields is in Hackney
E8 3RH and is well served by train and tube. The nearest public transport
is Hackney Central Overground. Upon exiting Hackney Central, walk
south down Mare street for approximately 10 minutes before taking
a right onto Richmond Road. A few minutes further and London Fields
will appear on your left, from where Slow Cycle will be signposted.
The nearest tube is Bethnal Green, which is on the Central line and
is a 20-25 minute walk away. If you are bringing your own bike, please
remember that you cannot take cycles on the Central line. For more
information please visit the Transport for London website, www.tfl.gov.uk.
Rules
of the Slow Cycle:
- No touching the floor. Once you have both feet
on the pedals you must not take them off again till the end of
the course.
- No trackstands. Keep those pedals moving!
- Bikes must travel forward only.
- No leaving the lanes. Nobody likes a road hog.
- Two wheels or less. Style points will be awarded
to anyone attempting the course on a unicycle, but any participants
wishing to do so should make note of rule 3.
- No touching other riders. You can’t do it
in a swimming pool and you can’t do it here either.
- The decision of the Marshals is final.
If you break
any of these rules, you are disqualified from your turn. You can
go back to the beginning and try again though!
Why
Prostate UK?
Through participating
in the Slow Cycle, you will be helping raise funds for vital research,
increasing awareness and training medical professionals to help the
1 in 2 men who will be directly affected by prostate disease in their
lifetime.
