SPECIALISED TRAINING
Prostate UK makes a limited number of training grants to urology
specialists to enable them to offer a better service to those affected
by Prostate diseases. These grants are usually for amounts of under £10,000
and we sometimes ask those benefiting from them to also make a personal
contribution.
Two recent such grants provide good examples of what can be done:
- John Donohue, who had recently completed a Fellowship
in urological oncology at the prestigious Memorial Sloane-Kettering
Institute in New York, was sponsored to undertake laparoscopic
training under Professor Fournier in Brest, France, for six months.
During this training he was also able to undertake further research
and to complete several papers, which have since been accepted
for publication. See
a report of the training here.
- Pradip Javle, who offers Laparoscopic Radical
Prostatectomies at the Leighton Hospital in Cheshire, was determined
to improve the skills of his theatre staff but was unable to get
funding from his NHS Trust. He sought support from the charity
to enable his team to visit centres of excellence in Europe: this
training has now been completed and indeed was reported in Edition
26 of UPDATE. Go
to the newsletter here and look for "Take pride" on
p8.
At present we are sponsoring the training of two urologists in Robotic
Surgery:
- Declan Murphy, from Guy's Hospital, training in Melbourne.
- Ben Grey, from South Thames, training in Adelaide.
Full details of both these grants can be found under "Research" – see
the grant awards G2006/15 and G2007/01 respectively.
Further details of the application procedure for such grants are
available from the charity.
